Cake 74- Central Institute for the Deaf

Found September 27, 2014

Central Institute for the Deaf began in 1916 after Dr. Max Goldstein dreamed that he could teach deaf children to talk. By the late 1920's there was a waiting list for the school and a second building was added. CID was a pioneer at the early intervention and education of deaf children.  In 2000 CID completed a new campus. Today Central Institute of the Deaf works with both children and adults who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Cake 73- St. Louis College of Pharmacy

Found September 27, 2014

This was take two at finding this cake since there is a lot of construction taking place around the College.

St. Louis College of Pharmacy is a private and independent nonsectarian professional university founded in 1864.  It is the oldest college of pharmacy west of the Mississippi.  The college admits students right after high school, and this year just began a seven year curriculum that will allow students to hold a Bachelor of Science degree after four years. It is consistently ranked as one of the best and most respected pharmacy schools in the nation.

Cake 71- Left Bank Books

Found September 27, 2014

Left Bank Books opened its doors in 1969.  It is the oldest and largest independently owned book store in St. Louis.  They offer new and used books and hope to spark public conversation by the diverse selection of book they make available.

Since we were out on a "double" cake search since we are losing time next weekend, I made sure to put this place on my list of places to come back and visit, since I am an avid book reader.

Check out more about the store here.

Cake 70-Chase Park Plaza

Cake 69- Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis (New Cathedral)

Found September 27, 2014

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis is a cathedral of the Roman Catholic Church located in the Central West End of St. Louis.

This New Cathedral replaced an old Cathedral located near the Mississippi River. Construction began in 1907, and the Cathedral was completed in 1914.  Consecration of the cathedral occured in 1926, and was designated a basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1997.  The church is known for its large mosaic, one of the largest in the western hemisphere, burial crypts, and an outdoor sculpture that promotes racial harmony.

The Cathedral cake reflects the mosaic artwork located within the cathedral.  Mass was being held at the time I visited the site, so I have yet to go inside this grand work of architecture.

Cake 68- Gaslight Square

Found September 27, 2014

Gaslight Square was a thriving entertainment district in St. Louis during the 1950's and 1960's.  It could easily be compared to the Delmar Loop district today.  Now most of the restaurants and theaters are gone from the area, and have been replaced by condominiums.  However, a small memorial exists on this corner to remind people of the thriving district of the 50's.

Cake 67- Gaslight Theater

Found September 27, 2014

The Gaslight Theater is located in the heart of old Gaslight Square.  The name was given to this entertainment district in the mid-1950's. Named for the popular gaslights, Gaslight Square rivaled Bourbon Street of New Orleans.  The Theater is still attached to West End Grill and Pub making for a fine experience of dinner and a show.

Cake 65- Saint Louis University

Found September 27, 2014

Naturally, since we were visiting a college campus again, it only seemed appropriate that we stumbled upon Homecoming weekend on the campus and a wedding across the street.

Saint Louis University is a Catholic, Jesuit university that is ranked as a top research institution in the nation.  Founded in 1818, it is the oldest university west of the Mississippi River.  The athletic teams compete in Division I, with their Billiken mascot.

Cake 64- Nine Network

Found September 27, 2014

Nine Network is a PBS member television station. The station has been on the air since September 20, 1954. It was the first community-licenced educational television station in the United States.

The cake details a beautiful picture of the night sky in St. Louis, as well as a little song, that I can only guess people were used to hearing on the Nine Network.  Here's a more detailed picture of the song.

Cake 63- The Sheldon

Found September 27, 2014

The Sheldon opened its doors in 1912 as home to the Ethical Society in St. Louis.  Various speakers and musicians loved using the stage.  After the Ethical Society relocated in 1964, musicians continued to use the concert hall and community center.  From 1973-1984, The Sheldon was home to two gospel churches. In 1988, the non-profit Sheldon Arts Foundation began, and in 1996, major renovations began to make the building more accessible.  The Sheldon now hosts over 350 events in a year in its Concert Hall and Art Gallery.

Cake 62- Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis

Found September 27, 2014

This cake is located inside, and blocked by window shades, which was rather disappointing.

The Urban League of St. Louis began as a civil rights organization in 1918, to help deal with growing racial tensions and improve living conditions of African Americans in St. Louis.  Since the organization has begun, they continue to help African Americans of St. Louis economically and deal with family, social, and educational values.

Cake 61-Powell Hall

Found September 27, 2014

Located in the heart of the Mid-town Arts District.

Another favorite of this music lover, because of course this cake reflects the home of the St. Louis Symphony.  While the building was constructed at St. Louis Theatre in 1925, the Symphony bought the space in 1966.  The hall now seats 2,689 people after major renovations were completed to turn the former movie theater into a concert hall.  Performances have been held in this hall since 1968.

Cake 60- Fabulous Fox Theatre

Found September 27, 2014

Someday I will see a performance at the Fabulous Fox!

The Fox Theatre has been providing the finest entertainment to St. Louis natives since 1929.  Check out their upcoming productions here!

I also took pictures of the sides of this cake, because it features playbill designs from several Broadway shows I have seen in the past, and several more that I would like to see!

Mamma Mia, Les Miserables, and The Lion King

The Phantom of the Opera, Jersey Boys, and Evita

Cake 59- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri

Cake 58- Centene Center for the Arts and Education

Found September 27, 2014

This past weekend, we took the opportunity to find double our usual amount of cakes since we will be journeying back up to Milwaukee for Andrew to take part in the Lakefront Marathon.  I chose to conquer all cakes that were in the Saint Louis University Area, as well as any cakes on the North East corner of Forest Park.

Our first stop was Centene Center for the Arts and Education, as that was where there was an available spot to park our car, and search for the eight cakes around that area.

As a music major, this cake quickly became another favorite of mine.

The Arts Education Council was founded in 1963 and is the only privately funded arts fundraising organization whose reach benefits the 16 country, bi- state, metropolitan St. Louis region.

Cake 57- St. Anthony's Medical Center

Found September 21, 2014

Another lucky find for me!  I had a doctor's appointment in this outer suburb of St. Louis and was pleased to discover that I could check another cake off my list in the process!

St. Anthony's Medical Center is the third largest medical center in Greater St. Louis.  Their faith-based, Catholic service to the area began in 1873.  St. Anthony's continued to grow throughout the years and was noted especially for their service during the Flu Epidemic of 1920, it's Surgical Dressing Unit that helped during WWII, St. Louis' polio epidemic of 1946, and Cobalt Cancer Treatment in 1957, along with detoxification of alcoholics.

In 1975, St. Anthony's opened at it's current location, and is the only hospital located in South Saint Louis County.  In 1976, the began the work of pioneering paramedic service, and in 1977, they began in-patient and out-patient services for psychiatric illnesses. In the 1990's and beyond, St. Anthony's has continued to expand it's buildings and services to provide the best services for those in south St. Louis County.

Cake 56- Schlafly Bottleworks

Found September 20, 2014

Having visited Schlafly Tap Room, back in July, I was surprised to learn that their second Bottleworks location was so close to the Seminary.

Schlafly was hoping to expand to having their own bottleworks as the demand for bottled beer grew throughout the nineties.  In 2000 they began purchasing the equipment they would need, and found an old supermarket to buy and house their new bottleworks in 2001.  They began demolition and construction in May of 2002, and opened their doors in April 2003, 70 years after prohibitions repeal.

Cake 55- Shrewsbury Metrolink Station

Found September 20, 2014

The Metrolink is a common form of transportation used my many St. Louis natives every single day.

The Shrewsbury Metrolink Station is part of the Blue line in and out of the city.  Both the Metro and buses pick up at this location. It is located in an area that also allows for future lines to be extended into other areas.

Cake 54-Kenrick-Glennon Seminary

Found September 20, 2014

I was looking foward to seeing another seminary's cake, but have to say (although I may be biased), that I think our cake has a lot more detail on it compared to this one.

Kenrick-Glennon Seminary is a Roman Catholic Seminary located in Shrewsberry, Missouri.  The history of the seminary began in 1818, but it did not move to St. Louis until 1842.  However, it was not until 1931 that the seminary moved to it's current location.

For a more detailed look at the history of Kenrick-Glennon visit the site below.

Cake 53- The College School

Found September 20, 2014

We passed this cake on the way into Webster Groves, but had to catch it on the way back since we weren't in the correct lane to turn in a snap a picture.

The College School is an independent, private school for children ages 3-14.  I love how the cake shows the brickwork of the school building behind it.

Cake 52- Serendipity Homemade Ice Cream

Found September 20, 2014

While there wasn't time (or money!) to stop in for some homemade ice cream this day, I'm hoping for a birthday treat next year from this fine business.

As the picture shows, Serendipity opened it's doors in 2003, and has been scooping ever since.  I took this picture from outside the store, since I felt weird going in to only get a picture of a cake and not making a purchase, but believe me, I will be back!

Cake 51- Loretto-Hilton Theatre

Found September 20, 2014

The Loretto-Hilton Theatre is also known at the Repertory Theatre of Saint Louis.  They have been providing live, professional theatre to the people of St. Louis since 1966.  For more information on upcoming performances, check out their website

Cake 49- Webster University

Found September 20, 2014

This weekend Andrew and I decided to conquer the cakes in the Webster Groves area.  There are several cakes very close to each other in this suburb.

Webster University was founded in 1915.  They are a global, tier 1, private, non-profit university.  This cake was located outside of the parking garage.  It was family weekend that day we were there, so there was a lot of extra traffic around the area.  Every time we go on a cake hunt, there seems to be something going on in the area we choose.

Cake 48-Washington Historical Society

Found September 19, 2014

On this day we had a teacher in-service workshop held in Washington, Missouri.  Lucky for me, this gave me a chance to get a picture of one of the further away cakes on the list.

The Washington Historical Society began in 1959 and works to preserve the history of Washington.  The cake is decorated with grapes to show how important the wine industry is to Washington.  It is said to be part of Missouri's Wine Country.

Cake 47-Lewis and Clark Boathouse and Nature Center

Found September 13, 2014

We had a nice walk along the Missouri River to find this cake.  St. Charles was hosting a carnival along the river that day, so it was fun to walk through that.  The boathouse was very beautiful, but undergoing a renovation.  (That is why there is caution tape shown in the picture.)

Andrew particularly enjoyed this cake, because it features is home state of North Dakota.  We decided to walk up to the museum, but decided we didn't want to pay the $5 fee to go in a see several artifacts that we've seen in other Lewis and Clark museums in the past.  I was particularly interested in seeing how high the floodwaters came up in the building a few years ago.  Now I understand why the museum is located on the upper level!

Cake 46-First Missouri State Capitol Historic Site

Found September 13, 2014

This cake took a little work to find.  We didn't know exactly what we were looking for, so we stopped into the Visitor Center.  The ladies at the desk were very helpful and gave us a map with stars marking the location of all St. Charles Cakes.

The cake sits outside of the Old State Capitol Building, among the cobblestone streets and old brick buildings. Walking anywhere in Old St. Charles, you can feel the history under your feet.

For more information on activities that take place at the location, click here.

Cake 45- St. Charles Old County Courthouse

Found September 13, 2014

The site of the old courthouse was chosen in 1851 and was commonly referred to as "Clerk's Hill."  The stone used to construct the courthouse was all quarried locally. Today it serves as the St. Charles County Executive Office Building.

Cake 44-Lindenwood University

Found September 13, 2014

We journeyed back to St. Charles over the weekend to find the cakes we failed to find on our first trip. First stop--Lindenwood University.

Lindenwood University is a four-year liberal arts college located in the heart of St. Charles, Missouri.  Lindenwood began educating young minds in 1827, and now offers up to 220 degrees to 17,000 students.

Cake 43- University City Lion Gates

Founds September 13, 2014

Located on the little triangle of land by the roundabout.

The Civic Plaza in University City is home to the Lion Gates and City Hall.  The Lion Gates were placed in 1909 to be used as gates into a private residential area.

The cake asks the common question heard around St. Louis, "Where Did you Go to High School?"  There are so many high schools in the St. Louis area, but the answer to the question gives everyone a great idea of where you grew up around the city. I love that you can bring a piece of chalk and find a way to answer the question on cake!

Cake 42-COCA

Found September 13, 2014

Wow! We went around the surrounding blocks about five times before we actually found this place.  It shouldn't have been that complicated, but we kept missing the street signs.

The Center of Creative Arts (COCA) has been providing meaningful art experience to St. Louis natives for just over two decades.  They offer educational classes, workshops, camps, and performances for kids and adults.  They also have contemporary art exhibits and provide an outreach program to low-income youths.

COCA has become the largest multidisciplinary art institution in the St. Louis metropolitan area and a huge resource to the community.

Their cake is simple, yet reflects the colors found in their logo.

Cake 41- Ruth Porter Park

Found September 13, 2014

It was hard to find a parking spot near this one since there was roadwork being done on the street in front of it.

This park is named after Ruth Porter, the founder and first executive secretary of the Greater St. Louis Committee for Freedom of Residence.  Ruth Porter worked to break down housing restrictions and integrate housing in St. Louis.

The park is a narrow 8.12 acre strip that runs through the West End Neighborhood.  The park has seen a major transformation with the help of Great Rivers Greenway and the creation of a walking/biking trail.

For more info see here.

Cake 40- Dogtown

Found September 7, 2014

This was another difficult find, as it wasn't quite on the corner of Tamm and Clayton, but just a little further west of the intersection on Clayton.

Dogtown is a traditionally Irish neighborhood in St. Louis, this is actually made up of four recognized city neighborhoods, and part of a fifth.  It got it's name in the mid 1800's due to the mining term as there were several small clay and coal mines in the area.

I look forward to dining at Seamus McDaniels sometime in the future, as I have heard it is amazing!

Cake 39- St. Louis Arena

Found September 7, 2014

Well this cake proved to be a difficult find.  Our GPS did not lead us to the right location, and since I hadn't done any reading about this one, I was looking for an actual arena, not condos!  But once we found it, Wow! What a beautiful area!

The St. Louis Arena, fondly known as "The Barn" stood in this location from 1929-1999. This indoor arena has since been replaced by the Scottrade Center located further downtown.  Much to public protest the Arena was demolished in 1999.  Today the area is home to several loft style apartments, a Hampton Inn, and several business, as well as a central green area with artistic fountains.

Cake 37- The Hill

I haven't had a chance to explore the restaurants located in this neighborhood yet, but am certainly looking forward to it!

The Hill is a St. Louis Neighborhood named for the largest hill in St. Louis.  The Hill is mainly an Italian American neighborhood with restaurants and shops that reflect that.  One of my favorite things about the Hill is that even the fire hydrants are painted to resemble Italian Flags!

Rigazzi's is the oldest restaurant located on The Hill neighborhood.  Opened in 1957, Rigazzi's is still family owned and a favorite of St. Louis locals.  They are well known for their toasted ravioli and Frozen Fishbowl, which can accommodate any drink!

Cake 35- Brightside St. Louis

Found September 7, 2014

I have to admit that I had no idea what Brightside St. Louis was as we headed toward our next cake, but was met with a pleasant butterfly garden upon arrival.

Brightside was an initiative started in 1982, to help "clean up" the city. Volunteers were recruited to pick up trash and debris that littered the streets.  Today, Brightside continues to be a non-for-profit organization that continues to provide a cleaner and greener St. Louis.  Brightside continues to remove graffiti, encourage community gardens, and help educate through it demonstration garden located on site.

Cake 34-Washington University School of Medicine

Found September 7, 2014

Washington University School of Medicine was founded in 1891 and has been ranked as one of the top ten medical schools in the nation.  Physicians and students work with nearby Barnes Jewish Hospital and Children's Hospital to complete their studies and training.

I think it's really neat that just the medical school got their own cake, because Washington University has a large presence around Missouri and it was neat to see that a sub-school within the university was deemed important enough to have it's own cake.
