Cake 198- Lewis and Clark State Historic Site

Found December 6, 2014

Located in Hartford, IL, Lewis and Clark State Historic Site marks the Illinois starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  This site along the banks of the River Dubois was chosen as their winter camp in December of 1803.  This allowed them to remain in United States territory prior to the transfer of the Louisiana Purchase.  All men were able to sleep indoors at Camp River Dubois by Christmas Eve.  Camp River Dubois was also an American military camp.  On May 14, 1804, the expedition left Camp River Dubois, under Clark's direction, and began to sail up the Missouri River, and would meet Lewis in St. Charles, MO.  Lewis designated the mouth of the River Dubois as the official point of departure in their expedition adventure.
