Cake 119- Fairground Park

Found November 1, 2014

Fairground Park opened in 1908 to the public.  Prior to that, it was a privately owned facility used by the St. Louis Agricultural and Mechanical Association for the St. Louis Exposition. The annual exposition ceased in 1902, in preparation for the 1904 World's Fair.  All former fair and zoo buildings were removed, except for the bear pits and amphitheater.  In 1912, the amphitheater was removed and replaced with the city's first municipal swimming pool, then said to be the world's largest. The pool was replaced by another pool in 1958.  The facades of the bear pits still stand at the park's entrance near Grand and Natural Bridge.
